CHILDREN got an early Christmas present– thanks to a visit from a Santa with a difference.
Bus operator Stagecoach North East sent Green Santa to visit pupils at Bexhill Primary School, in Town End Farm, yesterday after they were picked as winners in a scheme aimed at getting youngsters to think about environmental issues.
Primary school children across the region were given the chance to win a green gift worth up to £250 for their school by writing a letter to Green Santa.
The Santa project is part of the firm’s environmental programme Ready Steady Green and is designed to encourage children to be more environmentally aware and demonstrate how easy it is to make a difference to their local environment.
Stagecoach North East managing director John Conroy said: “Our Ready Steady Green programme has yielded impressive results since its launch in April 2009 and after the success of Green Santa last year we wanted to offer the children of the North East another opportunity to get their eco-thinking caps on.
“The Green Santa campaign provides a great platform to engage with and educate our local children to become more environmentally aware and hopefully our Green Santa will once again capture their imagination and inspire them to think of a gift on behalf of their school.
“We are committed to working with and for the communities we serve and through Ready Steady Green we are making a real difference.”
Winning entries were chosen from Sunderland, Hartlepool, Newcastle, South Shields, and Teesside.
