CELEBRITY hairdresser Neville Ramsay is back in business after a new salon has opened in New Durham Road, Sunderland.

The 49-year-old, who sold his Ramsay and Johnson hair salon in Blandford Steet three and a half years ago, took time out to nurse his mum, who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease.

But now the hairdresser, who has styled the likes of Sting, supermodel Jodie Kidd, and fashion designers Dame Zandra Rhodes and Gareth Pugh, has joined forces with A-list salon.

Neville, who will be working there part time, said: “It’s great to be back. I love the fact I’m working in a five-star salon with a great experienced team.

“My priorities have changed dramatically since nursing my mam. Things that were important to me aren’t anymore. I used to run 100 mile an hour but now I’m a lot more calmer and spiritual now.”

Neville says that he felt the time was right to come back. He said: “My mam is in a care home now and this industry has a huge pull for me. The glitz, the glamour the flamboyance and the people you meet, it’s addictive. I’ve done magazine work, TV work and celebs but nothing beats being behind a chair in the salon. And I love the people of Sunderland, too, they’re amazing.”

The new salon has been opened by Benjamin Tsang, property maintenance manager at 3Gates Property Letting agency on the same street.

He bought the former Cabella hair salon and has transformed the premises into two separate businesses: A-list salon and Eight Estates, an estate agency which is set to open in six weeks time.

Benjamin said: “When the opportunity came along to buy the building I knew it wasn’t one to be missed. A prime location just outside the city centre – the potential was there.

“Neville has cut my hair since I was a young boy, he’s a good friend of my family, so it seemed only natural that he could help me get the place off the ground. And together with the fantastic team that’s in place, he’s done exactly that.”

Neville will be joined by hairdressers, Stephen Gray, Elle Howey, Amiee Waistell and Sarah Haynes. Beauty therapist Becky Wilkinson will be offering everything from waxing to spray tans.

Benjamin added: “I’m really excited about this project and look forward to expanding in the future.”
