An award-winning Wearside firm is on the move.

Walker Filtration, which holds the Queen’s Award for International Trade, is swapping its current premises on Washington’s Glover Industrial Estate for a new home in the town’s Birtley Road.

At 12,000m², the new plant is around three times the size of the current factory, with nine acres of land for potential further expansion. Group general manager Lianne Walker MBE said: “It is a very exciting time for Walker Filtration.

“We have experienced successful growth in recent years and are committed to sustaining manufacturing and engineering. Larger premises are absolutely necessary for our continued development and this investment positions the company for the future; a future we look forward to with great optimism.”

Walker Filtration was launched in 1983 by Lianne’s father Brian. Lianne took over the day-to-day running of the company in 2005 and staff numbers have risen by 30 per cent in the last three years.

The company has grown from a small family business to a world-leading manufacturer of technically advanced filtration equipment for the air, gas and medical markets.

Exports to more than 75 countries worldwide now account for almost 90 per cent of sales and the firm has its own divisions in Australia, South Africa and the USA.
