SUNDERLAND housing firm Gentoo has been named Britain’s best business with a conscience.
The company has topped Business in the Community’s annual benchmark of responsible business, the Corporate Responsibility Index (CR Index).
Gentoo is the only organisation to achieve a 100 per cent score and the only housing provider to achieve a five-star rating.
The CR Index allows companies to measure the progress they are making to improve their commitment to social responsibility, assessing progress against a range of factors.
Gentoo Group chief executive Peter Walls, said: “Responsible business is embedded in our entire organisation.
“I couldn’t be more proud of this prestigious achievement – it recognises the hard work and commitment by our passionate staff.
“Being a responsible business starts with your staff and our people are at the heart of ours. We support them to be their best when they are at work.
“How can you expect them to give 100 per cent to help others if they don’t feel fulfilled themselves?
“In communities our activity ranges from helping with loneliness, engaging mature people, or working with young people who are not prepared to access either education or employment. Making a real positive difference is right at the heart of Gentoo.”
Analysis of the CR Index shows businesses are taking social responsibility more seriously, with an increase in firm taking social and environmental issues into account.
