THE Sunderland Echo Portfolio Business Awards have come full circle as far as leading Wearside businesswoman Anne Ganley, pictured, is concerned.
Thompson Building Centres has won a number of honours since the awards began and last year took the top prize, being named Overall Business of the Year, as well as scooping the Community award.
Back in 2004, Anne, the firm’s managing director, was named the Entrepreneur of the Year and as a strong supporter of entrepreneurship it was a perfect fit for the company to sponsor that category this time round.
She said: “This is my way of saying thank you and of giving something back. We have benefited so much from the Portfolio Awards over the years. They really are a highlight of the business calendar.
“I was particularly keen to sponsor the category of Entrepreneur of the Year as I think entrepreneurship must be encouraged at all costs and I strongly believe that the spirit of entrepreneurship is alive and well in Wearside,” she said.
“Sponsoring an award means that, even during harsh economic times, we can turn a positive light on the people and companies who are helping the city grow and prosper and will continue to do so in the future.
“It’s through acknowledging the contribution made by the people who win these awards that we can all look forward to better times ahead.”
Thompson Building Centres, founded in 1955, is the North East’s largest independent builders’ merchants with branches in Sunderland, Gateshead, Newcastle, Durham, Team Valley, South Shields and York. A subsidiary, Taps Plumbing and Heating Supplies, was launched in 2003.
This year’s awards will be presented in a ceremony at the Stadium of Light on Thursday, October 13.
