DURHAM is going virtual.

Launched this weekend, a new website and mobile app from Durham Business Improvement District (Bid) are putting the High Street at customers’ fingertips.

The Durham City app will be free to download and available to Android, Apple and Blackberry devices immediately and for Windows phones in September.

Launch events will be held in the Market Place from 10am on both days this weekend, offering assistance in downloading the app, as well as prizes for people who get involved in using it.

“We are embracing technology to help develop our city centre, reminding people of just what a great place Durham City is and encouraging them to shop in the city centre once again”, said Bid manager Sonali Craddock,.

“Durham is a vibrant and cultural place that attracts many people.

“We know many people are already using their smartphones to enhance their visits, so a Durham app and website, with relevant and up-to-date information and offers, can only help business and customers.”

To download the app, visit the App Store and search for the Durham City App.

It will be available to download free of charge from Saturday, when the new website at will also go live.
