To recruit staff, the supermarket giant worked with the town’s JobCentre.

Store manager Ian Harper and his team also joined forces with Working Links, which resulted in some long-term unemployed people from the scheme being interviewed.

An open day was held at East Durham College for potential applicants.

Mr Harper said: “In this time of economic uncertainty, it is great that we are able to create jobs for our local community and help get people back into work.

“I am really pleased with my new team and I’m looking forward to working with my new staff.

“We look forward to playing an active role in the local community.”
