Nissan confirms Sunderland jobs safe despite Russian factory plans

JOBS at Sunderland’s Nissan plant are safe despite plans to invest in its Russian factory.

The firm is pumping £130million into the St Petersburg plant, to double production of the Qashqai.

Last year 301,000 were made on Wearside, with Russia the biggest overseas market.

Industry analysts have questioned whether the new move would affect Sunderland jobs.

However, a spokesman said: “It would be wrong to assume that moving some production to Russia will hold us back here. Far from it. We need the additional capacity to make the Leaf on that line.”
