According to plans submitted to Sunderland City Council, the battery plant, which is in the north east corner of the Nissan complex, was built to support manufacture of the Leaf range of electric cars.

A design and access statement adds: “The continued success of the Leaf model has reinforced Nissan’s ongoing commitment to maintaining high quality manufacturing facilities at the Sunderland plant.”

A decision is expected before the end of August.
