The bosses of a Sunderland carpet company are hoping to top off a great year in business with a trophy.

Telfer Carpets & Flooring are an early entry into the Sunderland Echo Portfolio Business Awards 2015.

We get really good feedback from customers and it is a nice environment to come into. We treat people like we would want to be treated ourselves

Claire Telfer, partner in Telfer Carpets & Flooring

The firm, based at Queens Court on the Leechmere Industrial Estate, is an independent retailer specialising in carpets and all types of flooring.

And company partner Claire Telfer told how public feedback could stand the firm in good stead in the competition.

“We have a nice showroom and our customer experience is good. We treat people how we like to be treated.”

Claire, along with husband Billy and a warehouse operator run the firm which also has self-employed contractors.

Billy, who has many years of experience in the trade, wanted to set up his own shop to generate income and Claire said: “It seemed to be the next step.”

Claire now feels it’s time to shout out loud and proud about their achievements, and added: “I am normally shy about stuff like this but we want to shout about how good we are.”

Telfer has been put forward in the Small Business of the Year category.

The nomination said: “Our family run business has grown from strength to strength, obtaining several contracts such as Gentoo and City of Sunderland.

“Customer service and after care is important to us and our products and services and repeat customer business shows this works.”

This year’s awards will be presented at a ceremony at the Stadium of Light on Thursday, October 15.

Make It Sunderland is again our headline sponsor, and will sponsor our overall Business of the Year Award, as well as a Lifetime Achievement award.

This year sees a new category sponsored by Make It Sunderland, which will recognise the contribution of social enterprises.

Sponsors are Gentoo, Stagecoach, Andrew James, Station Taxis, Sunderland BID and Maxim Facilities Management Ltd, while Sunderland College is our partner sponsor.
