GENTOO is helping its tenants go green with the launch of a new scheme.
The Energy Saving Bundle (ESB) package gives customers a chance to make their homes warmer and more energy efficient without being hit by a hefty bill up front.
A small weekly charge is applied in respect of the energy efficiency measures installed and customers pay for the work done with savings on their energy bills.
Gentoo has worked with the Department of Energy and Climate Change and British Gas to devise a scheme which uses the business model for the Government’s new Green Deal.
Depending on the suitability of their property, customers have the opportunity to install Solar PV panels, new boilers and double glazed windows.
The scheme has so far been introduced on three estates across the city – Hendon, Low Ford and Pennywell, and Thorney Close – involving 1,200 customers and initial results are extremely positive, with almost four out of five customers agreeing to have work done.
Sally Hancox, director of Gentoo Green, said: “It’s great to see the enthusiasm for these measures increasing amongst our customers. It shows the appetite that there could be for the Green Deal when it arrives.”
The average charge applied is £1.06 a week, with a maximum of £1.59.
“At Gentoo we are all about improving our customers’ ‘art of living’ and to us the benefits of doing this are clear,” said Sally. This can help alleviate fuel poverty with customers using less energy to warm their homes, ultimately enriching their lives.”
Energy and Climate Change Minister Greg Barker said: “I am very pleased to see the market gearing up for the introduction of the Green Deal later this year. The success of the ESB trial is evidence of the enthusiasm there is among householders for energy-saving improvements, and the huge potential of the Green Deal model.”
Earlier this year Gentoo became the first social housing member of the newly incorporated Green Deal Finance Company and was also named as one of the UK’s first Green Deal Pioneers among a group of organisations that will work towards becoming the first Green Deal providers.
