TRAVEL businessman John Hays is Britain’s best.
The Hays Travel founder won the Travel Trade Gazette Outstanding Contribution to the travel industry award at a ceremony at London’s Grosvenor Hotel.
The event was attended by more than 900 representatives of the travel industry, who were asked to vote for their winner after watching short films about the three finalists.
John Hays is in his 30th year of running the travel business he started from his mother’s children’s clothes shop in Sunderland and the firm is still based in the city centre.
Now boasting 43 shops, its own consortium – Hays Travel Independence Group – and homeworking division, the business is the UK’s largest independent travel agency, employing more than 800 people, with a turnover in excess of £450million.
Jane Schumm, Hays retail and training director, said: “We are absolutely delighted that John has won this high profile award,”
