Help to find work in retail

Have your say

A GROUP of 40 unemployed people are taking part in a new programme to give them skills in retailing.

East Durham College is working with Jobcentre Plus and employers to help equip job seekers with the training they need to help gain employment in the sector.

Those on the Peterlee college’s Pre-employment Programme got to hear inspiring talks from top store managers, such as Darren Fucile of Nike, and Marks & Spencer’s Gillian McAuley – both based at Dalton Park.

“People who want to work in retail must bring colour to the shop floor. They must show personality, commitment and provide outstanding service to the customer,” said Gillian.

“These pre-employment training programmes are brilliant because they give people the skills and confidence needed to work in retail.

“Anyone who has done one of these courses certainly has a better chance of gaining employment over someone who hasn’t.”

Job seeker Thomas Freeman, 47, from Seaham, made redundant after working at Walkers for 19 years, said: “It’s definitely helping me understand what skills are required for which jobs.”
