TWO companies have been fined after a worker fractured his skull.

Peterlee-based GT Precision Products, and Seaham’s MB Air Systems, must pay £8,196.50 each in fines and prosecution costs after a contractor working for MB Air Systems fell from a ladder.

The 37-year-old suffered 14 hairline skull fractures after being hit on the head by pipework he was fitting at GT Precision Products’ base in Traynor Way, at Peterlee’s Whitehouse Business Park.

He also hurt his back, suffered from tinnitus, lost two teeth and was blasted in the eye by compressed air, Paul Miller, prosecuting on behalf of the Health and Safety Executive, told Peterlee magistrates.

Both firms admitted breaching a general duty to ensure health and safety from risks associated with working at height on December 13, 2010.

GT Precision Products said it had put in place remedial measures since the incident.

MB Air Systems said it had shown remorse and introduced more formal reporting of risk assessment.
