FANCY getting your hands on an electric car for a year?

Charge Your Car, the North East’s Plugged in Places scheme, is offering anyone test-driving an electric vehicle the chance to win one free.

The new ‘Why not electric?’ campaign highlights the savings drivers can make by switching to electric vehicles (EVs).

The campaign is underpinned by a new website – – which features a fuel calculator so drivers can see for themselves how much they could save.

It also gives drivers the chance to make a direct booking to a test drive in an EV, with dealerships throughout the region.

Anyone who does so will be automatically entered into a competition to win use of a Renault Zoe, courtesy of Charge Your Car and Benfield Renault.

Josey Wardle, project manager for Charge your Car, said: “Many people don’t realise the cost of fully charging an EV at home is roughly the same as their morning coffee.

“There’s also a myth that the range of EVs limits the journeys people are able to undertake, which is simply not the case, especially with a fully-accessible charging point infrastructure now in place in the region.

“For businesses, too, there are more reasons than ever to switch to EVs, or at least add an EV to their pool of business cars or vans.

Companies with staff who drive under 90 miles a day – visiting clients or customers in their local area – can make huge cost savings versus the use conventional vehicles.

“I hope the campaign encourages people to give EVs a go, as they could soon be reaping the benefits.”

Charge Your Car is responsible for
developing the North East’s EV charging point network, which has put in place
almost 500 public and domestic chargers.

The scheme caters for users via its membership scheme and pay-as-you-go facility.
