BUSINESS owners are now better protected from fires at their premises, say fire chiefs.

Firefighters are celebrating after the number of blazes at business premises in Tyne and Wear fell by almost half.

The service is crediting the support and information its staff provide to the business community with the 48 per cent fall in incidents – down from 691 in 2006, to 335 in 2010

Group manager Keith Addison said it was also down to orders which have made maintaining fire safety standards the responsibility of the owner or occupier.
