DOZENS of jobs are on course to be created as a Wearside hotel development expands.
After the opening of a £500,000 golf driving range and academy, the Mercure Newcastle George Washington Hotel is to build a new entrance canopy, upgrade its front facia and create a new breakfast room in the coming months.
Early next year, a 120-cover restaurant and lounge to the front of the hotel, in High Usworth, will also be opened to the general public as well as hotel guests.
Neel Chawla, co-director of Ailantus Hotels, the owning company of the George Washington, said: “We are very excited to enhance the hotel as one of the North East’s leading golf resorts, and providing excellent family amenities to the local community, which in turn will create 40 jobs.
“Being the closest golf resort to Newcastle and Sunderland demands continuous reinvestment. Our latest driving range and academy project will provide the very best practice facilities for golfers of all ages and ability.
“We will launch our junior and ladies group teaching academies shortly, which we believe to be two keys areas in the development of golf as a sport.
“We really think these projects will add something to Washington and the area around us.”
Mike Chawla, managing director, said that the firm is proud to invest heavily in the leisure and hospitality industry in the region. He said: “The North East is a real focus for us – it’s fantastic how much the region has developed over the last 10 years.”
Work at the George Washington is expected to be finished by the end of the first quarter of 2016.
