Crossing back into world of work

WINIFRED Rudlin’s new job is enough to stop the traffic.

After an 11-year career break the 60-year-old has landed a new role through Sunderland City Council’s Just the Job initiative.

Winifred, from Pennywell, has been employed by Sunderland City as a part-time school crossing patrol based at New Durham Road.

Winifred, who had previously carried out roles including cleaning and retail work, decided the time was right to re-enter the workforce after her husband George found himself out of work.

So she contacted Job Linkage, part of Just the Job’s network of support designed to help people get back into work or start up their own business, for advice and guidance.

Alison Cox is an employment counsellor at Job Linkage and was able to offer Winifred support with carrying out job searches, completing job applications as well as providing advice and guidance on interview techniques, which eventually led to her successful appointment.

Winifred commented: “After being out of the work for so long, the prospect of searching and applying for jobs was quite daunting.

“The support I had from Job Linkage made the whole process a lot easier. They helped me to rebuild my confidence and provided me with the practical skills to help with completing applications and going for interviews.”

Since securing the role, which involves escorting children and adults safely across the road at peak times, Winifred has never looked back.

“I enjoy all aspects of the job, but in particular I like helping children,” she said.

“Until recently I was involved with the Guides and Brownies but had to give it up due to other commitments, so it’s great to be working with young people again.”

Coun Bryan Charlton is Sunderland City Council’s portfolio holder for prosperous city. He said: “Since the launch of Just the Job, accessing support to get back into work or set up a business is more straightforward than ever before.

“Winifred’s story is really inspiring and shows that no matter how long you’ve been out of work, or what age you are, the help is out there to make the whole process as straightforward as possible.

“I hope even more people continue to take advantage of the fantastic support services here in Sunderland.

“I wish Winifred every success for the future.”
