THE pasty tax campaign is hotting up.

It was launched in response to Chancellor George Osborne slapping VAT on hot food served by takeaways.

Michael Dickson, whose family pork butchers employs staff across eight Wearside shops, said: “The local high street is under massive threat due to the structural changes in people’s shopping habits, exacerbated in recent times by the deep recession.

“We fear that smaller food retailers, which continue to attract people on the high streets across Wearside and provide employment opportunities, would be forced to close, which is why we are calling on our customers to support the campaign against the government’s plans.”
