AS one of its first ever winners, Anne Ganley is no stranger to the Sunderland Echo Portfolio Awards and, despite a tough year, the Sunderland business boss is backing this year’s event.
“The Portfolio awards are a really important opportunity for businesses in Sunderland to showcase the great work they do and to have those efforts recognised on a grand scale,” she said.
Anne is now heading up Thompson Waste Management, a business set up originally by her father Albie Thompson 60 years ago and with which she has been involved with for more than 40 years.
The firm is sponsoring the small business category at this year’s awards.
Its distinctive blue and green wagons have been a familiar sight around Sunderland across the decades, with the third generation of the family now involved in running the business, in the form of director – and Anne’s daughter – Gemma Ganley.
“This is a business we as a family are totally committed to and our aim is to increase our recycling targets year on year,” said Anne.
“This is a very satisfying area to operate in as we know what we do really makes a difference.” Along with a skip hire operation, the company recycles a range of waste materials from both business and residential households through its facility in Hendon.
The processes used means the majority of waste can be recycled for reuse in the construction industry.
This year’s awards ceremony will be held at the Stadium of Light on Thursday.
