TRANSPORT bosses are stepping in to cover 26 bus routes across Tyne and Wear on Boxing Day.
Nexus will use funding from the North East Combined Authority to pay bus companies to operate routes that would otherwise not be on the road the day after Christmas.
Councillor Frank Lott, chairman of the Transport North East Tyne and Wear Sub Committee, on the Combined Authority, said: “Boxing Day is getting busier every year. People rely on public transport to get to the sales, whether they are working that day or looking for a bargain.
“It is also a day when many people visit family and friends, while there is also a football match at the Stadium of Light.
“By paying for bus routes to operate, or by paying bus companies to extend services earlier or later in the day than they were otherwise planning, we are keeping people on the move.”
Among the routes are the 2A and 2C Washington-Sunderland; number 9 Sunderland-Jarrow; the 29A Sunderland-Downhill Lane; the 42 Sunderland-Silksworth; the 56 Sunderland-Newcastle; and the E2 & E6 South Shields-Sunderland.
A spokeswoman for stagecoach said: “Stagecoach in Sunderland is running special timetables on routes 3, 4, 10, 11, 13, 16, 20, 23 (between approx 10:00 - 18:00) on Boxing Day, in addition to the two routes (E2 and E6) that Nexus is supporting.
