The annual £25 charge has been introduced for the fortnightly collections of garden waste and starts in March.

It is estimated that charging for garden waste collections could deliver savings to the council of more than £800,000 per year.

Councillor Michael Mordey, Portfolio Holder for City Services said: "Our residents do a great job at recycling, and we saw significant increases in the amount of materials recycled over Christmas.

"We hope that more continue to do so over the coming months. Adding the online option as well as the telephone will hopefully make it more convenient for some people to sign up.

"Unfortunately, due to massive Government cuts we simply can’t afford to continue to offer this service for free. After looking at alternatives, charging £25 per year or £1.47 per collection for 17 collections of garden waste seemed a better option than losing the service altogether."

Residents who want to receive the garden waste service need to make their payment before Tuesday, March 1, to get all of the collections this year.

To sign up for collections, and pay using a debit or credit card, go to www.sunderland.gov.uk/gardenwaste or call 0191 520 5550. Lines are open 8am-6.30pm, Monday-Friday.
