The Sunderland great-grandad who was believed to be Britain’s oldest man has died just days after celebrating his 111th birthday.
Nazar Singh, of Ashbrooke, has been in his native India since the beginning of this year. He passed away on Saturday night.
Mr Singh’s son, Chain Singh Gill, said his father had been ill earlier in the year.
“He recovered from the infection but in the last 24 hours his organs have given up,” he said.
“He is no longer with us.”
Mr Gill and two of his brothers will fly out to India tonight and a funeral service will be held on Wednesday.
Mr Singh was born in the village of Gill in India on June 8, 1904, and has lived through two World Wars, mass floods and malaria outbreaks.
