Boy, 12, taken to hospital after being hit by a car near Sunderland secondary school

A 12-year-old boy has been taken to hospital after being hit by a car in Ryhope Road in Sunderland.

Emergency services were called to the scene of a collision involving a pedestrian and a car near Southmoor Academy.

The boy has been taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital and his injuries are not believed to be serious.

Motorists are being urged to avoid the area as emergency services deal with the incident.

A spokesman for Northumbria Police said: “Shortly after 3.45pm on Tuesday we received a report a 12-year-old boy had been in collision with a car on Ryhope Road, near Southmoor Academy.

“Officers and emergency services are still in attendance and the pedestrian is to be taken to hospital with injuries not believed to be serious.

“Motorists are asked to avoid the area at this time.”

North East Ambulance Service spokesman dispatched a double crewed ambulance and a specialist response car and transported one patient to Sunderland Royal Hospital accident and emergency department.
