BOXER Glenn Foot is in contention for a prize at this year’s Sunderland Echo Pride of Wearside awards.

The Marley Pots fighter has been nominated for an award in the Sporting Achievements category, following an impressive return to the ring in the summer.

“It’s good to be nominated,” he said. “I can’t wait for the night. It should hopefully boost my career.

“I feel I’ve done good for the North East and being nominated is good for Sunderland’s boxing scene.”

Glenn, 25, beat Coventry’s James Flinn with a third round stoppage at the Stadium of Light, in the Phil Jeffries-promoted Summer Rumble, in July.

The former Sunderland ABC welterweight turned professional in 2010, but lost his licence after being convicted for assault.

But now Glenn hopes to put that behind him, after the British Boxing Board of Control granted him permission to fight again.

“Next year I’ll be looking to fight for the English and then British title,” he said.

“My last fight against James was a good fight and a hard fight for the first time back. I made it look easy.”

The former Hylton Red House pupil has won all seven of his professional bouts and fights next at Aintree Racecourse on Friday, November 30.

Sunderland ABC coach Joe Purvis said: “His last fight for Sunderland ABC was an Amateur Boxing Association final at York Hall and it was voted ABA fight of the year.

“Since he turned professional he’s won seven in seven.

“He’s an honest and true sportsman. He lives and breathes the sport and he’s exactly the same now as he was when he was an amateur.”

The Pride of Wearside awards, on Wednesday, November 21, celebrate local unsung heroes.

It recognises people who have managed to do something extraordinary for the benefit of themselves and others.

Other categories include Child of Achievement, Community Champion, Fundraiser of the Year and Green Champion.

NOW in its seventh year, the Pride of Wearside Awards are a chance to give our city’s unsung heroes the recognition they deserve.
