Defoe returns to his former club looking to help the Black Cats pick up a first win of the season, having taken his goal tally to five last week.

Arter said of Defoe: “He’s had a fantastic career and he’s been one of the Premier League’s greatest goalscorers really.

“With the way he finishes, you’d have to put him up there with one of the best. He’ll get our full respect.

“He’s got a good relationship with the fans here.

“He did very well here when he came on loan, but hopefully we can keep him quiet and limit him to not many chances.”

The Cherries will not take Sunderland, as a team, lightly. Arter added on afcb.co.uk: “Sunderland might be on a difficult run at the moment.

“But they’ve got the ability to turn things around at any point. We’ll respect them like we will any side.

“Our home form has been great. We’ve attacked games very well from the start and need to keep that going. It makes it difficult for opposing teams when we play with a high tempo and it helps get the crowd pumped up too.

“It’s important we get back to winning ways, especially with the international break coming up.

“We’re in a good position where we could find ourselves in the top eight after the weekend, so that’s the ambition.”
