A LABOUR MP has called for an end to austerity as unemployment figures show a rise in the number of job-seekers in his constituency.
Easington MP Grahame Morris has said Prime Minister David Cameron is ignoring the North East and must do more to improve the economy, including giving his support to the phase two development at Dalton Park and supermarket schemes in Peterlee.
Figures show the number of unemployed people in East Durham, as of August, stood at 3,307, just under 10 per cent of its economically-active population.
The number of claimants is 441 higher than in August last year, putting it in 62nd place for the highest of the 650 UK’s constituencies.
He said: “We have an unemployment crisis, where people want to work more, but there are simply not the jobs available.
“The Government can no longer bury its head in the sand, austerity isn’t working and it is time for a real economic alternative to support growth and allow communities to flourish.”
