BOMB specialists have removed and destroyed a grenade after it was discovered at a Sunderland flat.
Officers from the EOD, Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit, were called in after police officers found the small bomb at Hendon Valley Court, Hendon.
It was found during a routine search of the flat and its lock-up at about 4.45pm on Thursday, after the man who lived there died.
A spokesman from Northumbria Police said: “The man who had lived there was ex-military and had a firearms licence. It’s normal procedure to search the property when a firearm licence holder dies.
“A full search of the flat and lock-up was carried out.”
Neighbours either side of the flat, just off Villette Road, were evacuated as a precaution while the bomb was removed and made safe by EOD.
