A BOMB disposal squad was called after a horse-rider picked up an unexploded hand grenade.
Police were called to Wheathall Farm, Whitburn, at 11am yesterday after the rider found the device on the former rifle-range field.
Not knowing what it was, the woman picked up the grenade and carried it to the farm’s stables.
Farm owner Bill Shield said: “I realised what it was straight away and put it in a safe part of the yard before calling the police.”
Officers sealed off a section of the farm while the bomb squad made the device safe.
It is understood the grenade was unearthed during excavation work at the former rifle range site.
Mr Shield added: “Back in the 1960s we found an old Army incendiary device, but I think this is the first time since then.”
