Boldon students first to have their art unveiled at new gallery

Four young artists from Boldon School have seen their work unveiled at the new Step-Up Gallery, in South Shields.

The space, at the Customs House in Mill Dam, aims to showcase the talent of young people from the region.

Elizabeth Kane, learning officer at the Customs House, said: “We’re passionate about identifying, encouraging and developing young artists and that’s why we’ve created this new space.

“I’d like to thank The Rotary Club of Jarrow with Harton, who have made this possible through their generous support.

“Our first exhibition in the Step-Up Gallery presents the exciting work of four young artists from Boldon School – Danielle Pigford, Sharna Seales, Rebecca Johnson and Kia McDonald. All four are in Year 13 and are going on to study arts subjects at university.

“We asked each of them to select two pieces which reflect their arts practice and the exhibition is entitled She’s Searching.

“The new gallery will feature the work of young artists who attend schools that work with the Cultural Development team through our schools programme.

“The programme includes tours, workshops and Arts Award projects both in school and at the Customs House.

“We have so much creative talent across the area, and I’ve been really impressed by the quality of work they have produced. I look forward to seeing future art exhibitions of young people’s work.”

The Boldon quartet of artists visited the gallery before the exhibition opened to look at how artists promote themselves.

The visit was organised by Michelle Hawronskyj, head of faculty, art, music and technology.

Speaking at the opening of the exhibition, Michelle said: “I’m so proud of the work that has been produced. The four artists featured in the exhibition are studying a Btec in Arts and Design Level 3, which involves a huge amount of work. The quantity and quality of work produced has been outstanding.”

Fred McQueen, of Jarrow with Harton Rotary Club, said: “We’re delighted to have supported the new gallery space and I’ve been thoroughly impressed by the amazing artwork on show.

“The Rotary Club is all about encouraging and promoting young people and that’s exactly what this new gallery space will do.”

The club meets every Tuesday night at 6.30pm at the Customs House and new members are always welcome.

The She’s Searching exhibition is open until July 20.
