A Boldon man accused of carrying out a pub toilet attack has been handed bail after appearing in court.

Tony Quinn, 31, was charged with grievous bodily harm in connection with an alleged incident at the Shakespeare pub in Gateshead when he stood in the dock at South Tyneside Magistrates' Court.

A 39-year-old man was left fighting for his life after a serious assault in the mens toilets of the Split Crow Road pub at about 4.30pm on Sunday afternoon.

He has been placed in an induced coma and is in a critical but stable condition at hospital.

Quinn, of Follonsby Terrace, Boldon, entered no plea to the GBH charge during the court hearing.

The matter was sent to Newcastle Crown Court for an initial hearing on August 30.

Quinn was granted bail until that date, with the conditions that he resides at his home address and does not contact prosecution witnesses.
