East Boldon Library in Boker Lane will close for bank holiday weekend at 5pm this Friday and reopen at 9.30am on Tuesday, September 1. The Summer Reading Challenge, entitled Record Breakers, continues each day at the library during the holidays.

Saint Nicholas Church in West Boldon has decided to support Water Aid by making it the recipient of its Harvest Gifts this year. Parishioners will take home a bottle of water and after drinking it they will then return the bottle filled with coins a month later to send to the Water Aid charity. The church social committee is planning an evening of bingo and Play your Cards Right in September. More details later.

Saint George’s Church in East Boldon has arranged an autumn bus trip, leaving East Boldon at 9.30am on Friday, September 18, for Ripon. The cost is £14. An optional visit to Newby Hall, the gardens and renowned doll’s house exhibition is available at an extra cost of £11.90 per person or a visit to the gardens and doll’s hall house exhibition is £8. A Heritage Weekend will be held once again in the ancient and historic church of St Nicholas in West Boldon on Friday, September 11, and Saturday, September 12, as part of the National Heritage Weekend programme. Stewards will be on hand to show visitors around and give a resume of the church’s history since Saxon times.

On Saturday, September 5, from noon-4pm, the summer funday in Grange Park, East Boldon, organised by The Friends of East Boldon Parks, will take place. There will be music, local food and ale plus a variety of local stalls, annual cake competition, pet show and vegetable show.

Boldon’s History Groupwill meet tonight in the function room of The Grey Horse in East Boldon. Anne Witherington will give a talk and presentation on Fifty Years in East Boldon at 7pm. Members will visit the Saxon Church and the George Elmy Light House Museum in Seaham on September 8. The coach will leave The Grey Horse at 9.30am returning at about 2pm. The trip will cost £8.

East Boldon Scout Group will celebrate the reopening of its new Scout hut, at the rear of the Grey Horse in East Boldon, on Friday, September 4.

A fine art and antique sale will take place at Boldon Auction Galleries on Front Street in East Boldon on Wednesday, September 16, at 10am. Viewing will be on Saturday from 10am-1pm, Tuesday from 2pm-6pm and Wednesday before the sale starts.

West Boldon Karate Club meets in the parish hall on Rectory Bank in West Boldon on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5.30pm- 6.30pm. The first lesson is free.

A coffee morning with cake, books and plants stalls, tombola and raffle will be held in St George’s Church on Front Street in East Boldon on Saturday, September 12, from 10am-noon. Everyone is welcome.
