Bogus callers stole cash from elderly gentleman after claiming he owed them for work

An elderly gentleman was targeted by bogus callers who claimed he owed them for work on his roof.

The man was approached by the callers on the afternoon of Friday, February 5, when they called at his address, in Fencehouses, Houghton.

It is believed they were invited into the property but said they would return later when told by the gentleman that he had no cash.

Whilst inside the premises it is suspected that a quantity of cash was stolen.

It’s believed the men were driving a small white van with writing on the side.

Officers are carrying out inquiries into the incident and are appealing for any witnesses to help trace the men so they can speak to them about the incident. They are also reminding people to be vigilant.

The appeal comes as Northumbria Police continues to carry out Operation Strongbow aimed at targeting bogus callers. As part of the campaign police are reminding residents to be on their guard to anyone who calls at their door unannounced.
