Police have identified a man whose body was found washed up on a beach at the weekend.
Durham Police have confirmed they have formally identified the body, which was recovered from the beach at Crimdon yesterday, as that of a a 26-year-old man from Blackhall.
The man's family has been informed but he will not be named until an inquest has been opened, which is expected to happen later this week.
There do not appear to be any suspicious circumstances.
A search was launched over the weekend after reports of a man walking into the sea.
Local anglers contacted the emergency services shortly before 10am on Sunday after seeing a man strip to his T-shirt and boxer shorts before entering the water of his own accord.
They described him as being in an ‘agitated’ state.
A full-scale search was launched by police and HM Coastguard, including the use of the police helicopter, but no trace could be found of the missing man on land or sea.
The search was called off around 3.30pm on Sunday once the light faded but resumed on Monday morning.
