POLICE have found a body in the search for missing American student Sope Peters.

A police spokesman said the 20-year-old’s family had been informed of the discovery.

The body was recovered from the river between Prebends Bridge and Framwellgate Bridge early yesterday afternoon.

Sope was last seen at 11.30pm on October 29 outside Klute Bar, beside the city’s Elvet Bridge. Police feared he may have fallen into the water, but extensive searches of the river over the last month failed to find any trace of him.

Detectives later called in the Teesdale and Weardale Search and Mountain Rescue Team, who searched the river.

Sope’s mother Tolu flew into the UK last month to renew the appeal for information and said: “I don’t know what has happened, but speculation is not facts.

“I visited Sope about a month ago, and he was his usual happy and contented self.

“My last contact was a text the day before he went missing to say he had lost his umbrella. I told him to buy another one.

“He was happy in Durham. He loved the place and the people here.”

Sope was studying economics at Hatfield College.
