Firefighters have tackled a blaze at a house under construction in Sunderland.

Nearby residents were evacuated from their homes while the fire burned.

Crews were called to Grantham Road, in the Roker area, shortly before 11.20pm last night.

Three properties were damaged by the fire, according to the fire service.

Police say an investigation is underway to find out the cause, and that sme nearby residents were evacuated as a precaution during the blaze.

A spokesman for Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said: "At 11.19pm yesterday, crews from Marley Park and Sunderland Central fire stations attended Grantham Road in Sunderland.

"This was a block of three two-storey properties under construction.

Nearby residents were evacuated from their homes while the fire burned.

"The end of terrace property one was 100% severely damaged by fire.

"The mid-terrace property sustained 20% severe fire damage and the other end terrace property sustained damage as a result of firefighting activities.

"The fire was extinguished using three main jets.

"Four breathing apparatus wearers tackled the fire."

One of the properties was badly damaged by the fire.

A spokesman for Northumbria Police said: "At about 11.20pm last night, police received a report of a house fire on Grantham Road in Sunderland.

"Emergency services were deployed and the fire was extinguished.

"Fortunately the house is currently unoccupied and no one was in the address at the time.

"Some nearby residents were evacuated as a safety precaution while the fire service battled the blaze but all returned to their address shortly after.

The fire broke out at about 11.15pm last night.

"Inquiries are ongoing to determine the cause of the fire.

"Anyone with any information is asked to contact police on 101 and quote reference number 1312 26/03/18, or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
