PEOPLE staying at a city centre hotel were forced to flee after fire broke out on Saturday evening.

The blaze at the Norfolk Hotel in Norfolk Street, Sunderland, started in a first-floor bedsit at about 9.30pm. Staff at the hotel raised the alarm and 45 people were evacuated from the building.

Fire crews from Sunderland East, Central and North fire stations were called to the scene and spent two hours tackling the blaze, which left the room severely damaged.
