THE Bishop of Durham has led his first Easter service since being enthroned.

The dawn service, often called the Dawn Vigil, is the first service of Easter Day and symbolises the point at which it is proclaimed that Jesus is risen and his new light is cast on the world to lift it from darkness.

The Right Revd Paul Butler led the service at Durham Cathedral this morning, where he Baptised five people and confirmed them along with 20 other church-goers from across the diocese.

As part of the service, he spoke about foodbanks, the elderly and Good Friday’s Great North Passion at Bents Park, in South Shields, which featured the work of artists from across Wearside.
