A bike rider was taken to hospital after colliding with a car in Sunderland.

The 25-year-old's condition is not thought to be life-threatening following the incident, which took place on South Hylton bank at about 6.08pm on Sunday.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "At 6.08pm, police received a report from the ambulance service of a collision involving a car and a motorbike on South Hylton bank.

"It involved a Suzuki and a Ford Focus.

"A 25-year-old bike rider was taken to hospital with injuries.

"The road was closed for about three-and-a-quarter hours for collision investigation to take place and for the vehicles to be recovered.

"Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to contact police on 101, quoting reference number 870 5/6/16."
