Sports writers, former players and even the odd rival were united in taking to social media site Twitter to predict Sam Allardyce will be a success in the Stadium of Light hotseat.
“Big Sam” was the top trending topic on the site within a couple of hours of the announcement.
Former Black Cat turned pundit Michael Gray Tweeted: “Delighted with our new appointment. Now for some stability at the football club. Best of luck Big Sam #safc” while former teammate Darren Holloway said: “Well I’m pleased and relieved at that appointment of Big Sam, hope he shakes it up and signs some quality in January. #SAFC”
ITV’s Simon O’Rourke said the appointment made sense, given the club’s lowly Premier League status: “Big Sam makes sense. He’s who they need. The awful Allardyce football debate’s pointless - #safc fans been watching awful football for years.”
Sky TV anchorman – and Echo SAFC columnist - David Jones said: “Welcome Big Sam ... every Sunderland fan is behind you. #SAFC” while Talksport’s Andy Goldstein predicted success for both Big Sam and the Premier League’s other new boy: “Klopp and Big Sam. Two great appointments. I’m guessing both sets of fans will be delighted”
There were kind words from Trevor Sinclair, who played under Allardyce at West Ham: “Best of luck Big Sam @SunderlandAFC did a fantastic job @whufc_official for me and stayed loyal after he left #topman.”
And Alan Shearer was rattled with Big Sam’s first home game set to see the Black Cats take on the Magpies, especially with Allardyce’s unhappy departure from St James’s Park: “Always happens! Sunderland appoint a manager who has them fired up just before the derby. I think Big Sam might want to prove a point!”
