DISABLED drivers could have to pay five times more for their Blue Badges.
Traffic chiefs have proposed upping the cost of permits in County Durham from £2 to £10, to fund changes designed to cut down on fraud and abuse of the system.
Durham County Council’s ruling cabinet will meet on Wednesday to consider new plans to beat fraudsters, and will be asked to approve the price hike.
Coun Morris Nicholls said: “The Government is introducing a major programme of reforms to the Blue Badge scheme in order to bring about improvements and more effectively address abuse and fraud, which results in an estimated £46million in lost parking revenue for councils each year.
“The implementation of these reforms will mean extra costs to the council unless we increase the fee we charge for a Blue Badge.”
Consultation saw 88 per cent agree with the proposal.
