Adam Elliott is accused of being off the driver's seat while travelling in a Ford Ka convertible along the Felling bypass in Gateshead and over the Tyne Bridge in Newcastle on January 26.

At Newcastle Crown Court the 25-year-old pleaded not guilty to a charge of dangerous driving.

His barrister Nick Cartmell said: "He is adamant he wasn't standing.

"He is four inches short of seven foot. It is a small car.

"He accepts he was high in his seat but wasn't standing and was in full control of the vehicle.

"It is a very, very small car.

"It would have been like the Big Friendly Giant in Noddy's car."

Elliott, of Aldwick Road, Scotswood, Newcastle, will be tried by a jury on January 23 next year.

Judge Edward Bindloss granted him unconditional bail in the meantime.
