CYCLING stalwart Dave Willock was almost lost for words after being told he was in the running for an award.
The man who set up The Wearside Family Cycle Group in 2007 has seen it flourish. It now has around 70 members with meetings and rides held every week for enthusiasts.
The group’s successes have put Dave in contention in the Best of Wearside awards and he told the Echo: “I am astounded.”
Dave said: “There are about 70 of us but we get a hard core of about 25 to 30 who come out on a Sunday.
“We have got ex-runners who have had problems with injuries, and people who have had hip replacements.
“I am asthmatic but I thought to myself ‘I am not going to let this beat me’ and I took up cycling to keep the lungs going.
“As for being nominated for an award, wow, it is amazing.”
The group is open to anyone interested in cycling in and around Wearside. It meets on Sundays from 9.10am outside News Silksworth ski slope.
Dave added: “It started out as a family group to get children and parents out. Now, there is a core of us who meet every Sunday.”
The nomination for Dave read: “The Wearside Family Cycle Group helps get people of all ages fit and active by cycling on weekends.”

The awards, which are being held in association with Gentoo, will close to entries today
They will culminate in a grand finale at the Stadium of Light on Wednesday, November 19.
For now, though, we want you to get in touch with your own heroes before the closing date for nominations, which is now just hours away.
