Beer festival celebrates small breweries

A BEER festival will make its return this week as ale lovers celebrate the work of micro and independent breweries.

The Sunderland and South Tyneside Branch of the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra) will host the Sunderland Octoberfest at the Bonded Warehouse on Low Street from Thursday to Saturday.

The event is now in its fifth year at the venue.

Beer styles will include mild, bitter, stout, wheat beer, fruit- flavoured beer and a chilli plum porter, with the festival’s focus on the new wave of small brewers from London, the Midlands and Yorkshire.

Organisers say all brewers in its branch area will be represented, including Jarrow, Maxim, Darwin and Temptation. The festival will be one of the first to have Jarrow Amber Ale, one of the first beers brewed at its new brewery following its return to Jarrow

The festival is open from 4pm to 10.30pm on Thursday, 1pm to 10.30pm on Friday and from noon on Saturday.

Admission is £1 and free to students and Camra members.
