Ruth Berkley, chair of WHIST, said: “It is an honour to welcome Baroness Kinnock to share with us the valuable work that WHIST does for women in South Tyneside, especially as this is our 30th year.

"We reach out to some of the most vulnerable women in our communities, and thanks to European funding we help them to come through difficult times in their lives.

"Many of these women then go on to become volunteers helping to support other women using our services.”

Angela Oxberry, chief executive officer, said, “WHIST plays a vital role in tackling serious issues such as domestic violence, and women’s isolation. For our users and volunteers it is a lifeline and a safe environment to help them reach their potential.”
