Peter Watts, from Redcar, and Brian Batey, from Gateshead, were speakers at Sunderland Budgerigar Society monthly meeting held in Deptford and Millfield Community Association, Havelock Towers, Hylton Road.

The meeting incorporated the first North East National Show meeting since its successful 2015 event. It is planned to stage the 2016 show at the same venue, Grindon Youth Centre. The group is now well established in at Deptford and Millfield Community Centre and all fanciers are welcome to join members on the first Wednesday of each month, at 7.30pm. Tea, coffee and biscuits are served during the meeting. On Wednesday, November 4, the society will welcome a panel from newcastle BS.

The Lions Club of Sunderland needs your help. When Rudolf’s work is done, visiting the children of the city this Christmas, Rudolph (and Santa’s sleigh) need some shelter. All Rudolph needs is the occasional few carrots and a plate of oats. Surely, somewhere in the Sunderland area there is a space in the corner of a garage, warehouse or outhouse that could be used. In The Beginning–The story of St Peter’s Church, Monkwearmouth, built in AD674 by Benedict Biscop, will be told by a video presentation at the monthly meeting of Sunderland Men’s Probus Club in Ashbrooke Sports Pavilion on Wednesday, October 28, at 10.30am. Visitors are welcome.

A soup lunch will be held at St Nicholas Church on Saturday at 12.30pm. The cost is £3 to include a choice of soup, bread, tea, coffee and homemade cake. Everyone is welcome.

A Messy Church will be held in Sunderland Millfield Salvation Army, Rutland Street, on Saturday, October 31, from 10am to noon. There will be games, crafts, stories, food and lots of fun. It’s all free and for all ages. Children under seven must be accompanied by an adult

Who Killed Dracula’s Bride – Halloween Murder Mystery Night will be held in The Chesters Pub on Saturday, October 31, at 7pm. Put your sleuth skills to the test, have fun and help a good cause. Sunderland Floral Art Club Christmas Open Night takes place on Tuesday, November 17, at 7.15pm in The Royalty Theatre. John Theton’s demonstration is entitled All I Want For Christmas. Tickets are £7, available from Pam on 5227832 or you can pay at the door. John comes from Armathwaite in Cumbria and this will be his first visit to Sunderland Floral Art Club.

A pre-Christmas coffee morning and sale will be held in The Salvation Army, Rutland Street, Millfield, on Saturday, November 7, from 10am to noon. Tea and coffee will be served, along with refreshments. The table-top sale include bric-a-brac, white elephant, cakes, sweets, Chritmas gifts and wrapping paper, and toys.

Ewesley Road Ladies’ Fellowship will meet tomorrow at 7.30pm. On this occasion it will be a members’ night and sales table.

Outlook, a relaxed midweek service, will be held in St Gabriel’s Church on Monday from 2pm to 3pm. It starts with a short, informal service, followed by refreshments and a chat.

Sunderland Minster is the venue for a vintage/craft fair on Saturday, November 7, starting at 10am. Browse the stalls selling jewellery, hand-crafted greetings cards, refreshments and much more. Entrance is 50p.

Pallion Gospel Hall, Pallion Road, will hold a family service at 4pm followed by tea on the last Sunday of the month. All are welcome.

A table-top sale will be held on Saturday, November 14 from 10am in St Mary Magdalene’s Parish Centre, Wilson Street. On sale will be jewellery, clothing, books and lots more.

On Saturday and Sunday Sunderland, Millfield Songster Weekend will have guest conductor and weekend leader Commissioner Dick Krommenhoek, guest soloist Moira Wilson and Philip Raine on Trombone. There will be a united chorus of 100 voices, Sunderland Millfield Band and Timbrelists on Saturday at 6.30pm at Bede College, Durham Road. Tickets are £6, under 16s free. Then on Sunday at 10.30am and 2.30pm at The Corps, Rutland Street, Millfield.

Sunderland Ladies’ Probus Club will meet in St John’s Church, Ashbrooke, on Thursday. Coffee is served at 10am and the meeting begins at 10.30am. Guest speaker will be Marjorie Dodds and the title of her talk is Town Crier.

Tea and bingo will be held in The Church of The Good Shepherd on Saturday at 2pm.
