A BANNED driver who sparked a police chase has been jailed.
Stephen Day was just weeks into a half-year road ban when he sped off at up to 50mph in a 30mph zone in Southwick. Sunderland.
The 22-year-old, who has never held a full driving licence, was in a Renault Clio he bought two weeks earlier and had no insurance for.
Newcastle Crown Court heard Day confessed during police interview his driving had been “terrible,” and said he panicked when he realised he was being followed.
Prosecutor Paul Rowland said: “The vehicle was driven at speeds of up to 50mph in areas where a 30mph limit were in force. The vehicle failed on three occasions to give way at junctions when it should have done.
“On one occasion, it contravened a red traffic light.”
Day, of Palmerston Road, admitted dangerous driving, driving while disqualified and having no insurance.
Judge Simon Hickey jailed him for 12 months with a further two-year road ban.
Christopher Rose, defending, said Day’s life was “chaotic” at the time but he has now settled down.
Mr Rose added: “This is one of those cases where a final chance could be given to a young man.
“He is now showing an encouraging attitude.”
