NOMINATIONS have opened for an exclusive awards scheme.

Durham Police Authority’s Community Awards 2011 aim to recognise individuals and groups in County Durham and Darlington, who have made their communities safer.

The ceremony will be held at Ramside Hall Hotel on December 1, before police authorities are replaced by directly-elected crime commissioners next year.

There will be 30 prizes across six schemes: caring, serving, volunteering, achieving, courageous and dedicated.

Launching the awards at Durham Police headquarters, in Aykley Heads, Peter Thompson, chairman of Durham Police Authority, said: “We want to identify those silent heroes who do things, week in, week out that benefit the community.”

Mike Barton, Deputy Chief Constable of Durham Police, said: “We can’t do our job without the police authority and we certainly can’t do it without the public.”
