THE writing duo behind some of Britain’s best-loved sitcoms will be giving a lecture in Sunderland.

Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais, who penned classics such as The Likely Lads, Porridge and Auf Wiedersehen Pet, will present their free talk, We’re with the Band, as part of the University of Sunderland’s Discover series.

The pair began writing together in the 1960s, and their trademark combination of dramatic plot lines and sharp, naturalistic dialogue created some classic British comedy.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the first broadcast of Auf Wiedersehen Pet and the 40th anniversary of Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads. In their talk, the pair will discuss their career and look at three films they wrote inspired by music: Still Crazy, 1998; Across the Universe, 2007; and The Commitments, 1991.

The talk takes place at 7pm on Friday, November 22, at the Murray Library Lecture Theatre on Chester Road.

Tickets are free but limited, and they must be booked via the University of Sunderland’s online store:
