Asian thrill for Eppleton youngsters

Two youngsters from Eppleton Cricket Club will get a taste of international experience when they travel to India and Dubai respectively this month.

All-rounder starlet Layla Tipton has been given the opportunity to play for Durham Women’s first XI in their pre-season tour to India, despite being only 13.

Layla, who has been a reserve for England Under-15s for the past two years, scored 507 runs last season for Durham at an average of 42.25, featuring two centuries and two 50s.

She said: “I can’t wait to go and play cricket in India - it’ll be so different to playing in England and will be such a great experience.”

A club spokesmen added: “This is a fantastic opportunity for Layla and we wish her all the best. We know she has so much talent to show and know it will all pay off.”

Meanwhile, 18-year-old Sam Blacklock, who scores for Eppleton’s first team and Durham junior squads will spend two weeks in Dubai and the United Arab Emirates scoring the Under-19s Arch Trophy, which sees clubs from around the world competing, including teams from Eastbourne and Hampton.

Sam, asked to head to the Middle East by umpire Neville Kent, said: “I was so excited when Neville asked if I would like to score in Dubai, as it’s a once in a lifetime in opportunity.

“I’m really looking forward to going over there and scoring in the heat.”

Sam will also become official scorer for Durham Under-15s and Under-19s this season, beginning his campaign with a southern tour by the U15s in May, when Durham visit Essex, Middlesex and Lincoln.
